The Spartan’s blade is made from 4mm thick Japanese AUS10A Steel. And it was designed to echo the aesthetics and cutting performance of the world famous Kukri.

The unique shape is designed after the ancient Greek “Kopis” sword. But in more modern terms it’s a drop point with a large recurve.

It’s a very tough steel that resists chipping but it tends to lose its edge very quickly. But you can easily sharpen the edge and it will hold its edge fairly well if you don’t want it razor sharp.

Though recurve add some additional effort to the sharpening process. You have to really watch your angles as you work along the recurve.

AUS10A is rust resistant and can hold itself against in moist environment. The recurve offers you an incredible slicing power. As long as it is sharpened, it will cut through wood, skin, bone and ropes with surprising ease. I think you get the picture by now that this knife is more suited as a “hard use” knife than an EDC.

The blade on this knife has a reinforced tip and a high hollow grind that begins about 3/4 of the way up the blade. The tip is great for penetration and the hollow grind is excellent for slicing.

The Spartan has very versatile blade geometry and it’s a great performer. The knife has been given a beautiful blasted finish. And “Spartan” logo have been nicely etched into the knife. Overall blade is nice, materials used are also up to the quality. Great for cutting, chopping and slicing. Moreover, due to the shape of the blade it will be great for “chef’s duties” also.

Handle

Handle of the knife is made from hard plastic called grivory. The tough grivory plastic handle makes this a heavy-duty and durable knife. Suitable to last under extreme heavy usage.

It grips around your hand in such a way that there is no chance your hand is going anywhere when you hold it. Basically you have to break your hands to have this pulled out or break your grip, it’s that impressive.

I’ve rarely used a knife before which feels as secure in your hand as this one. The grivory handle scales are over full stainless steel liners. They have some weight, which overall makes knife chunky. I would have loved if these liners are milled out, but it’s good to see how flush they are in the scales.

The scales have tiger stripes texture on them, which is really comfortable and also look cool. There’s a thumb plate on the blade, which feels awkward to hold. When you really need to choke up on the blade. Thumb plate is used to deploy the blade either by thumb or by the pocket.

There are clips on either side of handles, one for right hand carry and other for left hand carry. Unfortunately, the pocket clip causes the knife to ride very low in the pocket, which makes it difficult to open. But for concealed carry it’s a plus point. There’s a big pommel at the back of the handle which can be used as an impressive impact tool. Overall, I really like the ergonomics as a whole.

This is a knife designed to cut through anything you put in front of it and the handle keeps the knife in your hand – it’s simple and effective.

The locking mechanism on Spartan is Tri-Ad lock. It’s an incredible and industry leading locking mechanism in today’s market. Designed by Andrew Demko and it is very strong, perhaps too strong for someone with a fair amount of strength like me. The spring is very strong that you could struggle to unlock the knife. But if you see the positive side it’s impressive how durable this locking mechanism is. There are videos of people absolutely wailing on this knife and the lock holds up. No wonder why people have used it like fixed blade knife.

Pros
  • Well built and durable knife.
  • Easy to use and comfortable.
  • Good handle grip and very sharp.
Cons
  • Getting used to this knife will take time.

Cold Steel Spartan Field Test

Conclusion

Now, after going through everything. I’ll say it’s not suited for EDC because it’s too chunky for an EDC. But it is definitely useful for hunting, camping or any other heavy-usage outdoor settings.

If nothing else, it would also make an excellent conversation piece, since it has such a distinctively impressive and mean-looking appearance. Also you might not use your Spartan every day, but it was definitely a good addition to your collection. So what do you think? Is is for you or not?
